What should I expect if I go to a sleep clinic for testing for sleep apnea?
what if i cannot sleep because of all the mysterious Semidetached machines for myself and the strange environment? what are u suppsoed bring? What if you want to pee in the middle of the night? There you PPL monitoring at night or just machines?
Have had several sleep studies and worked in a sleep laboratory. It is different from sleep in the lab but the lab is designed as a hotel room. Most people do ok. You will arrive around 8-9 hours. Fill out the paperwork. Put PJ (sweats are very good) then the connect son Tech. You have an EEG, EKG, the son on your face and your legs. There is also a microphone and a snore as a sensor flow of oxygen cannuala. The son are grouped and connected to a small box on the pocket book. This box plugs into a socket in the wall. There is also a camera in the room to monitor you. Technicians are in another room nearby. There is also an intercom. If you need to go to the toilet you simply enter the technology. They will come and pick up the box from the wall and you take it in the bathroom with you. This is not a big deal. All world usually visits the bathroom at least a couple of times a night. Technicians will wake you up to 5 hours and pick you. Often they have breakfast. Most have a shower if you must go to work. I usually just go home. For GET the stuff in your hair, use a washcloth and wipe as much as you can and comb. When the shower, wash your hair with conditioner before washing your hair or shampoo combo as PERT. what appears to help get the Goop your hair. What to bring includes information regarding insurance, copay, tolietries a pillow if you want something loose and comfortable sleeping, slippers, if you normally wear them, drugs, a book to read while waiting if you like. The room usually has a television. Any other questions let me know.

my sleep apnea because of my baby dying of SIDS?
I had a daughter 13 years ago and died due SIDS and about 3-4years later I discovered that I had Sleep Apnea. I wonder if I could have caused him to die because I knew I did not already had a sleep problem that makes me stop breathing as well as SIDS, where the baby stops breathing. I am pregnant again and I am afraid this could happen again to me. Help. Martha
YOUR didn't sleep apnea cause your girl sudden death, perhaps it was the Sleep apnea also and that is why she died. Still SIDS cases arent very well known so it is difficult to know what caused it. but it certainly wasn't because you had. You can ask your doctor about whether or not apnea can be transmitted to your baby and perhaps this time you can sleep with your baby for the first few months in order to detect possible breathing problems. A friend of mine I am awakened by a night because the phone rang wrong number anyway if she went to check on her daughter, who wakes often minimal noise and discovered that she wasn't breathing! She performed CPR on her and was able to get his breath. After a spell in hospital, discovered that she had sleep apnea! However, it is under control now and that baby is a preschooler anow very happy. The moral of the story is that there are things that can be done if your baby does end up having sleep apnea. Good Luck!

Filed Under Sleep Apnea | Leave a Comment

Chances of a person to develop obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) may depend on a number of factors, some of which are beyond their control. When they are combined with other potential causes such as excess weight, drinking or smoking can significantly increase risk.
One factor that is somewhat beyond our control is age. Sleep apnea is more common are people aged over 30, with the highest percentages among males over 40 years.
It is more common in men than women. We think between 12 and 20 million Americans are affected by sleep apnea, ranging from mild to severe. To exit this sex, about 24% of Americans suffer from sleep apnea compared to only 9% of women.
Post-menopausal women are more likely to be concerned by it and the percentages between men and women became much closer after women have gone through menopause.
There been many studies to examine the difference between patients of both sexes. Some of these studies show that men are 2 to 3 times more likely suffer from sleep apnea, while other studies have shown that these 5 to 6 times more likely to deal with than women.
The Genetics plays a role in sleep apnea, but this is not really known role. If you have a family history of apnea Sleep - by men or women - is more likely that you will develop the disease at some point in your life.
Race is another factor that appears play a role. Afro-Americans and Hispanics and Pacific Islanders are more likely to be affected than Caucasians. They are still affected by it, but in lower percentages.
Any type of health problem that affects your breathing may eventually contribute to apnea sleep. Health conditions such as Marfan syndrome or Down syndrome that can lead to abnormalities of the face and head - known as cranio-facial problems - Lead to a much greater chance of sleep apnea.

sleep apnea solutions

Fortunately for those suffering from sleep apnea there are solutions. In fact, there are several devices for sleep apnea now available than ever before. In this article we will explore some of these devices, how they work and the benefits they offer.
Apnea Sleep is defined as "a common sleep disorder characterized by brief interruptions of breathing during sleep." These interruptions Sleep is considered apnea. They usually cover a period of ten seconds or more and can occur any number of times any throughout a night. Those who suffer from this condition often wake during the night due to their struggle to regain their breath. Often they have no Remember these events.
The CPAP
The most common devices for sleep apnea is a CPAP machine. Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is a form of therapy that creates a continuous stream of air flow in the lungs to make it possible for "uninterrupted breathing and unobstructed paths air during sleep. "
This is accomplished with the use of a CPAP machine and mask covered his face. The CPAP machine pumps a constant flow of air into the mask, which keeps the throat open all night. The result is a reduction of snoring, which is often one of the signs more frequent in this condition.
A CPAP sleep apnea device should be used whenever you sleep, even for naps. And while a device CPAP will usually reduce the number of apneas during the night, it does not cure this condition. It simply allows for a good night more REM sleep. Lack of REM sleep may be one of the most destructive of this condition.
Some people have difficulty with CPAP devices. They are too noisy or too uncomfortable, or in some cases, they wake up with a dry, stuffy nose every morning (there are devices for sleep apnea with a warm air humidifier which can minimize the latter problem).
The Oral Appliance
The next of the most common device for this condition is the oral appliance. Initially, oral appliances have been designed to reduce frequency of snoring and they did an excellent job. However, with improvements in their design, they have also become useful to those who suffer from mild to moderate sleep apnea.
There are a variety of oral devices available. Two of the most popular include the splint and the mandibular advancement device (MAD). The splint keeps the tongue in a particular position throughout the night. In so doing, it allows the passage air to remain open and clear.
The mandibular advancement device (MAD) looks like the sports mouthguards that athletes wear protection. This apparatus forces the lower jaw in a direction toward the rear, allowing plenty of room for airflow. It encourages you to sleep on your back. It also improves air flow into and out of the lungs (though less so for those who suffer from severe forms of this condition).
The oral appliance and CPAP machine are two devices for sleep apnea most common. They are also two of the most efficient appliances. If you have been diagnosed with sleep apnea, ask your doctor about best treatment for you in your particular situation.
